Ian Burnside

In Memorial

Ian Burnside passed away in his home as he wished on January 6, 2023 at the age of 78.  Much beloved husband of Pamela, brother of Duncan (Pauline), Diane, and Bruce (predeceased).
Sadly missed by nieces Shelley, Tanya (Craig), and nephew Erik (Cindy), sisters-in-law Sylvia and Lorna (Scotty), and his extended family and friends. Predeceased by niece Lisa, nephew Brent, and parents Thelma and Duncan.  Dearly missed by best friend Mike (Jill).

Ian had a keen intellect and pursued many interests in great depth including chess, bridge, golf, painting, music, and health and nutrition.  Ian had a great sense of humour and excelled at solving complex problems as a computer analyst.

Ian did things his way.  Ian tackled Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) with great courage and determination in Oct 2018.  He declined chemotherapy and remarkably lived for 4 good years beating the expected life span of 12 months.  Amazingly Ian kept his sense of humour throughout his journey with AML – while doing exercises in the hospital, he asked the physiotherapist if she was getting tired.

Ian received exceptional care from the Stronach Cancer Centre, Southlake Hospital, and New Tecumseth Home and Community Care.  Sincere gratitude to Brenda, Colleen, Rupal, and Ellen for their amazing support.

Ian can now have a well deserved rest and be at peace.

A gathering of family and friends will be arranged later in the year.
The family would appreciate donations to the Alliston District Humane Society or to a charity of your choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Rod Abrams Funeral Home, to leave expressions of sympathy please visit www.RodAbramsFuneralHome.com

I am very sorry to get the news of Ian’s passing. It was very nice to read about Ian’s great strength and “fight” against cancer.

Ian passed on January 6th and in Ireland this is a special day called Little Christmas Day or Nollaig na mBan.

I wish you and yours strength and all the very best during this difficult time.

    Kind regards,
    Victor (Pamela’s cousin in Ireland)

I was so sorry to hear this news Pamela: my condolences to you, family and friends at this sad time.

While I never met Ian, he sounds like a wonderful person who confounded the medics with his own unique approach to his illness. He must have been a very strong person and no doubt will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

(May his soul be on God’s right hand).

    Colin (cousin from Ireland)

Ian was a well-read, intelligent, gentle soul. He wisely chose how he wanted to live his life after he was diagnosed with a nasty disease. This wasn’t an easy path, as it meant often having to courageously go against the “doctors’ orders”. Yet, in his calmness, he gained the respect of all those who cared for him. His choice was to go peacefully with dignity in his own home beside his devoted and loving wife.

This you did with courage and grace. I admire your strength and fortitude, and enjoyed your sense of humor, Ian. May you rest in peace.
