Mathew Kyle David Hartman

In Memorial

Hartman MathewBeloved, funny, ambitious, life-loving son of Steven and Sandra Hartman died on December 22, 2023 at his university home in Guelph. Loving brother of Nathan and Ethan. Mathew was deeply loved by his surviving grandmother Therese Freeman, and his aunts and uncles: Paul and Lora Hartman, Ruth and Bill Flynn, Linda and Gene Duval, Pat Kennerson, Michael and Teresa Kennerson, Davis and Carrie-Anne Kennerson. He will be forever remembered in the hearts of his partner Emily Wright, his many cousins and dear friends, fellow students and work colleagues.

Mathew was an Honours Bachelor of Science Agriculture student at the University of Guelph and was beyond excited to become “the best damn farmer” ever. This being his third year, Mathew was passionate about the science of dirt, fascinated with the life of plants, and loved his part time work in the plant research lab at the University. Mathew loved the outdoors at any time of the year, but the freezing cold winters were his favourite months. A former competitive mogul skier, Mathew loved to spend his winter breaks skiing the spaces between the trees at the family home in Big White, British Columbia. He also cherished his time with friends and family at the cottage on Lake Temagami. Mathew was an avid canoe tripper and spent two months canoeing the arctic with Camp Wanapitei in his final year of high school. He was quick to throw on scuba gear to explore the underwater world on family sailing and diving trips.

Mathew forged a path that honoured his adventurous soul. To honour his memory, live life large. Lift others up, canoe big rivers, have bonfires, go winter camping, string a hammock between the trees and listen to nature, ski big mountains, walk in the woods. Laugh lots with family and friends. And always say I love you.

The family will receive friends at Rod Abrams Funeral Home 1666 Tottenham Rd., Tottenham 905-936-3477 on Friday, December 29, 2023, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 11 am. Cremation will follow. For those who wish donations in memory of Mathew to Medical Ministry International or Headwaters Health Care Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences and memories may be left for the family at www.RodAbramsFuneralHome.com.

    Hartman Family,
My deepest and sincere condolences to you all. When I got the news, my heart broke. I had the opportunity to get to know Matthew on our class trip to Costa Rica, in February of 2023. He so deeply appreciated the little things of life – I could tell, just from the 10 days lived alongside him. I loved listening to his stories about his travels, and hear about his aspirations after school. He spoke so highly of Em. It was clear to me he cherished his friends and family. He encouraged me to think outside the box, when it came to my career and what I loved most in life.
Praying for your family in this time.

I miss ya Matt, I’m sorry I wasn’t there for your funeral. You were an awesome presence to have in the lab and I always looked forward to chatting with you. It was just so awesome having another queer person in the lab that appreciated New Vegas, soulsborne games and Will Wood. Though we only knew eachother for a short time, I’m greatful to have gotten to know you and for all the conversations we had. My heart goes out to your folks, Em and your siblings. Rest easy dude, you were a fucking champ

My sincere condolences for your loss.

Reading about Mathews passing and reflecting on his ambitions and character, it hit me deeply to know we have all lost a good being in this world. I couldn’t help but think if this were to happen to me, and the hole it would leave for my family. I am sending you much love and strength as you carry his life with you. I never crossed paths with Mathew, I studied Landscape Architecture accross from the Ag Sciences building, but I would have loved to meet him.

I will live large and climb big mountains and work to make a better world as Im sure he aspired to.

Thinking of you and yours. God bless.

Dear Sandra and Steven, Nathan and Ethan, please know how very deeply sorry I and my family are at Matthew’s passing. From the earliest days at the Maples I was always struck by how intensely focused and passionate Matthew was about Science and Knowledge and Life. I’m sure that anyone who ever met or knew Matthew could not help but to appreciate these qualities and that in the all too short time that he was here with us, he touched and made a huge impression on so many lives. I know that you his family, his friends, his community, his field of interest, his country and indeed the world has lost a brilliant and beautiful soul. Take heart in knowing that he will never be forgotten.

I rode the bus to CDS with Mathew every morning and after school until the day he got his license. He was quiet, but was always incredibly kind and cracked some great jokes on the way home. In his first year at CDS he and I went on a dog sledding trip and I vividly remember all of the laughs we had. My most fond memory was when we all had a snowball fight. I came away with quite a few battle wounds – man, did he ever know how to pack a snowball! I was also there to see him and Em go from friends to loving partners and hearing how happy he made Em, I knew they were perfect for each other. Although Mathew and I lost touch after high school, I see myself as incredibly lucky to have the memories of him that I do. My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, Em and everyone that knew him.

Steve, my heart goes out to you and your family…. just a parent’s worst nightmare. My deepest sympathies to you, Sandra, Ethan and Nathan.

Take comfort in the fact that even though Mathew has passed away, his spirit still lives on in the memories you have shared together and all the beautiful moments you experienced together. Petra and I share in your sorrow and we’ll be thinking of you.

Mathew was a kind, creative, active, and artistic person who knew how to make those around him smile. In short, he was a blessing.

      My deepest condolences.
