I never did meet Shirley’s Mom and Dad, Mable and Hugh, but Shirley did follow in their footsteps. For example, Mabel was the treasurer of the United Church Women’s unit at York Pines Church and Shirley too became the treasurer of the U.C.W.

Shirley was a founding member of the York Pines United Church and attended the first worship service in May 1966. As a member of the U.C.W. Shirley would have recited the following pledge at every monthly meeting: “To unite women of the congregation for the total mission of the church and to provide a medium through which we may express our loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ is Christian witness, study, fellowship and service.”

Shirley’s employment was at one of the manufacturing industries in Schomberg. Her vocation was her family and her curling and her church. Her volunteer service was always given gladly.

Shirley did not wish a funeral service. But, I hope the church can have a memorial service and invite family to attend for an individual whose passing should be recognized in a communal way because Shirley made a difference. May God care for her.

    sincerely,
    peace in believing,
    Ross

I was sad to hear about Shirley passing away. Shirley was very active in the community. She was very committed to York Pines United church, helping at many church fundraisers. She was always ready to help out her neighbours. I enjoyed curling against, and with Shirley at the Schomberg curling club. Shirley was a great skip, and she always displayed good sportsmanship. She will be missed. Patti Agnew

Our condolences to the family. We have been Shirley’s next door neighbour for 56 years. Always greeting with a smile and bringing us baking or vegetables from her great garden. Shirley was a hard worker, her home and grounds were so well kept. Shirley will be missed.
