Our hero has taken his final bow. On January 1, 2026, embraced by his family’s love, he departed this world peacefully at Margaret Bahen Hospice in Newmarket.
Al Anderson, at the age of 89 years, beloved husband of Gwendoleen Anderson (nee: White). Loving father of Michelle Passera (Daniel), Dawn Stewart (Sandy), Glen Anderson (Denise), and Colleen Anderson (Daniel Gibeau). Dear grandfather of Caitlyn Herbert (Blair), Johnathon Passera (Elise), Rebecca Passera (Dr. Nazari Divrnik), Shelby Malloy (Daniel), Sarah Stewart, Jordan Bodimeade (Samantha Hofmann), Ian Anderson, James Stewart, and Kathleen Anderson. Sadly missed by his great-grandchildren Lochlan, Logan, Elias, Theo, Brooklyn, and Elsie. Fondly remembered by his siblings Ron Anderson (the late Jackie), Dianne Way, Jim Anderson (Sue), the late Fern Sadler (the late John), and the late Mary Moylan (Dave). Forever in the hearts of his nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Al will be greeted by his beloved dog Skipper.
Alan lived a humble yet remarkable life. Born and raised in East York, Toronto, he grew up surrounded by his five siblings. His artistic talents led him to a long and successful career as a structural steel draftsman. Over the years, he worked at Ontario Hydro, Tobias, and Kilborn, later running his own company, Banerjee/Anderson, before retiring from Petroff Architects.
At just 16, Alan met the love of his life—his sweetheart, his Gwennie. From that moment on, their story was written in love. Together, in their first home on Wild Cherry Lane in Thornhill, they raised four wonderful children, each carrying special traits and talents of their father.
Alan was a man of many gifts, especially musical. In 1958, he bought his beloved Martin guitar—his greatest treasure apart from his family. Any chance he had, he played: fireside, in the living room, or even during bathtime to entertain his kids. That guitar became an honorary Anderson.
In 1970, Alan and Gwennie pooled their pennies and bought a piece of land in God’s country—Burk’s Falls, Ontario. Over many years, they built a humble yet cozy cottage where Alan taught his children to love nature. Walks in the forest, swimming in the lake, and learning to water ski are just a few of the cherished memories that will live on forever. Later, he passed this love of cottage life on to his grandchildren, teaching them everything from fishing to appreciating the beauty of the outdoors.
At home, Alan was deeply involved in his community—singing in the Thornhill Barbershop group, St. Luke’s Choir, and serving as President of the Parish Council. His faith was central to family life, with Sunday Mass, potlucks, and Christmas concerts a regular part of his world. He played a key role in rebuilding St. Luke’s Church, where two of his daughters were later married. Alan was also instrumental in starting the women’s hockey league in Thornhill and served on the committee to build the Thornhill Community Center—lasting contributions that enriched the lives of many.
Alan’s love of sports led him to coaching and playing hockey. When he wasn’t on the ice, he coached all his children and later his grandson’s 3-on-3 team in Newmarket. Baseball was also on his coaching roster for Michelle, Dawn, and Glen. Even in retirement, Alan stayed active—joining a choir at the cottage, golfing, painting (thanks to Bob Ross!), and enjoying Sunday night men’s beer league hockey. His children and grandchildren treasure many of his early paintings.
Alan’s musical heart extended beyond his home and church. He brought joy to others by singing in seniors’ homes in Burk’s Falls, sharing his gift and brightening countless days.
Alan also had a lifelong passion for classic cars. He loved his Jaguar and Range Rover, and nothing brought him more joy than taking his sweetheart for drives along Old Barrie Road, savoring the open road and the simple pleasure of being together.
Beyond his children, Alan’s greatest joy was being “Grampa” or “Gramps” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family gatherings, especially the annual Anderson Christmas, filled his heart with happiness. His life was rich with friendships, music, laughter, and love!! He made his mark.
Although Alan’s journey ended peacefully on January 1, 2026, his legacy of love, kindness, and joy will live on in all who knew him.
Wally, Dad, Grampa—you will be missed forever.

Thinking such nice thoughts of bygone days with Al, in the Almaguin Choral Society. He was always so upbeat and fun, and I know my late husband Fred always enjoyed the comeraderie with Al. As a couple, we so enjoyed get-togethers at the Anderson house….such a comfortable place to be, with Gwennie at the helm! My last Al hug was in tge hall of Land of Lakes, when his daughter brought him to Cabaret, and I drove down from Timmins to attend, as well. Thinking of all the Anderson clan, especially Glennie, as you begin this new journey….Hugs to all…Sandy Clark

Dear Gwen
Sharon and Lorne Stenning shared with me the new of Al’s departure. My late wife Rita and I were honoured and privileged to be your friends during our time in Burk’s Falls. I enjoyed singing with Al in the Almaguin Choral Society where we shared years of laughter and convivial singing in rehearsals and concerts. There is no address book big enough to hold all of Al’s admirers and friends, all of whom loved him and valued his friendship. He brightened a room immediately upon entry. And was among the first to offer help, solace, support and encouragement in any situation.
While our paths diverged when you moved away from your lakeside home near Burk’s Falls, the memories of our time together never faded. We loved you both.
Gloria and Alan Kidd says
During his time at his cottage home in Burk’s Falls, Al was a wonderful bass singer in the Almaguin Choral Society. He was the soda shop lead in one of our’50’s cabarets. He was instrumental in getting many of our sets constructed. What a privilege to know and sing with this gem of a man.
Our condolences to you Gwen, and family.
Shirley Moore says
Such wonderful memories of Al with time spent with the Almaguin Choral Society. From gracing the stage with a solo performance of “Christmas in the Trenches,” to literally building stages, Al contributions were all in. He and Gwen were big supporters in every way. It was a privilege to know and love you Al.

Alan was/is/and will always be my big brother. He always had my back as I had his, although I don’t think he ever needed me as much.
Al was a great mentor and brother and uncle to my two sons. Alan and Gwen were a dynamic loving couple who I love dearly. Behind every great man is a woman and he couldn’t have made a better choice in Gwen.
My condolences to Gwen, Michelle and her family, Dawn and her’s, Glen and his and Colleen And her’s. I love you all. And also for being the best backup team for your parents ever. You all stood and stand by your family with much love and compassion. Love to all, Aunt Dianne xo

My sincere condolences to Al’s family. He is one person I thought would live forever because of his zest for life and his robust physical stature. We have yet to match him as a bass singer in our St. Luke’s church choir and Barbershop Quartet singing! We had so much fun singing together, especially in events like “The Music Man”! I will forever remember the great times at the cottage with the choir members. He will be a wonderful addition to the choir in Heaven!

So many good memories we have of Al, his stories and love of life. Our deepest condolences to all the family at this very sad time.
Al was a very special person to us and we loved him and our time spent with Gwen and all the Anderson family, especially in the early days when we first arrived in Canada in 1977. He introduced Tony to barbershop, took me to the hospital when baby Hannah was on the way. Looked after our three children when I had to go into the hospital. Happy times spent with the family at their cottage and so it goes on.
A special person indeed No end to his kindness and his legacy will live on. Al will be deeply missed.

Gwen, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. It has truly been an honour to have had the pleasure of doing Al’s hair for the past 15 years, and to have known you and Al as some of my very first regular clients. I will always remember Al opening the door for you and helping you with your coat, such a true gentleman. His sense of humour so often reminded me of my own grandpa, and those moments will always stay with me. Please know my thoughts are with you and your family during this incredibly difficult time, and I am sending my heartfelt condolences.

Gary and Marilyn Hubbard says
On arriving at our new home on Cedar Court in Tottenham in July of 2024, the man across the street waved me over with a big smile and a welcome hand shake and introduced himself as Al Anderson. We soon found that our mutual love of the guitar and singing would create an instant bond.
On many occasions, we would sit and talk and share memories. Al said he still loved to sing but he could no longer play the guitar. I told him that was why I had moved in across the street and I could accompany him anytime he wanted to sing. With Gwen’s encouragement, we put together a 3-song medley to entertain the folks at the Pines in our first “Open Mic” in early 2025.
Last summer, he brought me 3 songs to learn with the intention of playing these at a fall concert, but unfortunately health issues prevented this from happening. It was an honor and a privilege to be able to sing and play with Al at what would turn out to be his final public performance.
As I gaze out my window, I can see him sitting in a chair and gathering up leaves. I will miss him and the short but memorable times we had together. Heartfelt condolences from Marilyn and I to Gwen and the family.

Mr A was like my second father. I was a lucky girl growing up next to the Andersons. His whistle could be heard for blocks and it wasn’t just a call for Michelle, Dawn, Glen & CC. It was for all of us. When I lost my own parents over 30 years ago Mr A & Mrs Gwen moved up to surrogates so it was important to me to have them meet my Australian husband many years ago in lieu of my own parents and get their seal of approval. It probably helped that Brian, as a musician shared a love of music with Mr A . I’m so glad I was able to see him the last time I was in Canada. Thank you for everything Mr A. You and all the Andersons are family for me. Will be there in spirit on Friday. Much love. Adrianne Louise, Brian & Matt xx
