Cooper: James Heaton (Retired from Northern Telecom)
Suddenly at his home in Tottenham, on Tuesday October 26, 2010. Jim Cooper in his 84th year. Beloved son of the late George Heaton Cooper and Florence Margaret Cooper (Greenhow). Fondly remembered by his Church family at Rich Hill United and his many friends at Tottenham Court. A graveside service will be held at Mount Tegart Cemetery, 6328 4th Line East (Mill Street) on Wednesday November 3, 2010 at 11am. Reverend David Zub, Jim’s friend will officiate. I have 40 years of memories of one of the most caring people I have ever known. Jim, godfather to both of my sons, gave us wonderful memories of long weekends and summer vacations at the cottage and visits to his home in Toronto. I was fortunate to visit him at his cottage this past summer. We kept in touch by phone or email and always contacted each other on October 9th, the day on which we both celebrated our birthday. Many times over the years this celebration had taken place at the cottage and usually included a cake with candles. My sons began visiting the cottage when they were just over one month of age and became Jim’s little shadows in their early years. Jim taught us patience, kindness, laughter and above all to count our blessings.

Like the comment before me, I have very fond memories of Uncle Jim and I only just found out that he is gone. We always looked forward to the cottage and having him meet us as we drove in, his same happy smile and wonderful sense of humour. My brother and I would follow him everywhere – he was always interesting and funny and had amazing stories to tell us. He took us fishing, trips in the motorboat around the lake to see the beavers and walks through the forest to see Aunt Phyllis. Everyone was always happy to see Uncle Jim and going to the cottage to see him was one of the highlights of our summers and some of my favourite childhood memories.

“Coop” was a great friend of my father John Irwin. They both worked at Northern Telecom. I have very fond memories of Coop. As I child my father & I would travel to his home in the beaches to pick up a pair of his Toronto Maple Leaf season tickets in gray section 93 row L at the Gardens. We spent many summer weeks on Deer Lake in Haliburton where he built his cottage. It wasn’t unusual to see my father & him enjoying a Molson Golden for lunch at the cottage. He was a very kind, caring man and I will always cherish the memories of him from my youth.
