I was thinking of “Uncle George” the other day as I was having fish and chips, one of his old neighbourhood favourites!
I had been lucky to spend time living with George and his niece Allison in my early 20s, and it was always full of adventure and laughs. From the life advice (don’t waste your time cleaning too much, the house will be here when you’re dead, buy Stanfields long johns; they’ll last a lifetime), stories of his youth in Nova Scotia, his dietary wisdom which consisted of a strict regiment of blueberries, shredded wheat, and chicken with a side of Al Bundy and a hefty supply milk, to his generosity and kindness picking me up from work and making sure I learned all of his key phrases (“shit out of luck with a broken oar” “good night Irene”).
Some of my favorite memories are of spending time with him on the front porch as he heckled and struck up conversations with every passerby and friendly neighborhood Tootsy Wootsy, good old Cloverdale mall road trips to check in with his coffee club, watching him try his very hardest to train my puppy into being the perfect guard dog and then later finding them cuddled up and eating ice cream together, and we can’t forget the time that he caught a stray cat and decided to take it in.
I am very sorry for your loss but want you to know that I think of and share stores of him often. He was a fantastic person; knew how to keep people laughing, and was always looking out for those that needed a hand or an extra cheering on.
I am very grateful that I got to know and spend time with him.
Sincerely,
Kiah

Mr. O’Neil I will always remember as a kind person. Someone who enjoyed the company of others and always offered a smile. At times, he had quite the sense of humour too. He had me laughing many times usually at the expense of his son George, in a teasing manner. Great memories!
My condolences to family and friends of Mr. O’Neil.
