John Leo Pendergast

In Memorial

Pendergast John 3Pendergast: John Leo,
Passed away suddenly with family by his side at Stevenson Memorial Hospital, Alliston, on September 24, 2024. John , at the age of 83 years, was the beloved father of Elena (Miguel Ebrahimi), Laura (Sherif Attia), Julie, Thomas, and Mary. Loving grandfather of Nathan, Tyler, Matthew, Zein, Seleem, Bilal, and Magdy. Dear brother of Jim (Anne), Paul, and Margaret Rowland (the late Fred). He will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephew, Kathy, Rob, and Lesley. Forever in the hearts of his extended family and friends.

John (“Pappy”) grew up and lived his life on the family farm, a place that grounded him in nature and hard work. He had a deep love for hockey, a sport he followed with passion throughout his life. He also found great spiritual connection at St. James Church, where his faith was nurtured over the years.

The family will receive friends at Rod Abrams Funeral Home, 1666 Tottenham Rd., Tottenham, 905-936-3477, on Monday, September 30, 2024, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. James Church, Colgan, on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 12 p.m., followed by cremation. A reception will be held at the Funeral Home’s Cliffside Hall after the Funeral Mass. For those who wish, donations in John’s memory to St. James Church, Colgan, would be appreciated. Condolences and memories may be left for the family at www.RodAbramsFuneralHome.com.

Paul. So very sorry to hear about John’s death. Would you believe it – I heard it from Rita and Agnes from out west. If there is anything I can help you with, please just reach out. Your presence at Bill’s funeral meant so much to me.

We were saddened to hear of Pappy’s passing. Back in the day we both worked for Don Bergin. Years later when I was self-employed I hired Pappy to work alongside us. I had three other young guys and Pappy could out work all of them on a daily basis despite being 30 years their senior. He was always the first one there and never missed a day. We shared a lot of laughs and we appreciated his easy going demeanor. We often reminisced with friends about what a great man he was. We will remember him fondly.

By remarkable coincidence I decided to check the parish bulletin from Colgan Church this morning and saw a notice of John’s recent death. He was for many
years during our youth one of my closest friends and I have many happy memoriesof him and his family that have survived the many decades during which the circumstances of life have kept me away from Colgan. I particularly remember his unique sense of humour and the occasions when he invited me to some of the most delicious meals I have ever tasted, prepared by his mother at the Pendergast farm. I also have fond memories of his company in the congenial settings of such places as the Loretto House.

As happy as I am with the memories, I am also saddened by his passing and I share that with his family members, both those whom I have known in the past and those that have come along in recent years. I regret being unable to join you
all in commemorating him formally in Colgan tomorrow. That also applies to anyone else of my friends from from the community (actually an extended family in my memory) who might read this message. God bless you all.

Elena, Laura, Julie, Thomas and Mary and families
It is so sad to hear that Pappy has left us. He was such a positive father and great person. Holding down the Pendergast Farm extended that heritage for a very long time. Our farm — the High House was immediately north of theirs and the memories are wonderful. With the neighbouring farmers co-op threshing etc. the highlight was at the Pendergast farm. It is a level farm and May’s lunches were like banquets with display of pies at the end. The pasture field south of the house had a great ball diamond which was used steadily by the local teams- a lot of good times and fun. The Pendergasts
were community builders — we Thank Them. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you say farewell to a loving Father
