Tia,John and Kelly my heart is breaking for you.. Nelson was my second father, he was always there for me. He is an angel, he always should up when I least expected it. I know he is still watching over me. I will miss him dearly. Nelson gave the best hugs in the world, he held you so tight ( like you were in a cocoon ), and nothing could ever harm you. He held you so long like it was the last time he was going to see you even if you just saw him the day before.

When I think of Nelson I smile. He was always cheerful and ready to be of assistance. When I joined COPDA as a newcomer and attended the first social function he was the first to greet me and made me feel comfortable. I knew he was standing by in case I had ‘Bronze Fields’ (horse) difficulties. I appreciated that.

I was so sorry to hear that Nelson had passed away. I got to know Nelson when I boarded my horse Will-A-Way Me Too at Liz Barnes farm back in the 80’s He could be such a character and always threw in a good dose of humour in every situation. He was an excellent horseman and was always willing to share his knowledge and generously lend a helping hand whenever it was needed. He certainly will be greatly missed.

Then perhaps, I could replace the sadness with a heart of celebration for a man that touched and blessed so many lives just by being in his presence. My father was a very blessed to have Nelson as a friend and you as his wife. It is true that he had a passion for the horses but his first love was you and his children. My first memory of Nelson was of him and Gerry telling a hilarious story of being runaway with by a mini. He was laughing so hard while telling this story. Nelson always made a point of infusing safety into every conversation. He checked my harness at my first OCDA show and offered gentle advice on what to do to be safe. He came to another first competition with me when I was worried about taking out my young pony. Just a few days ago he sent me an email offering up another gentle suggestion on how to make a safer rig when he saw a picture of me starting a green pony in harness. I loved that he cared so much and was so genuine. I loved his big laugh and bigger bear hugs. Nelson had such a wonderful impact on my family and me. We will miss him deeply.

We are so saddened to hear about Nelson’s passing. He was the most loving, kind and giving man. He gave “special name’s” to others, that made you so feel loved by him.
His words of wisdom, his hugs, his surprise drop- ins and the “honks” from the horn of his his pick up truck, as he drove by our house, will never ever be forgotten.
Heaven just received an Angel, and our sky now has a beautiful bright star, shinning down over all of us, who knew this wonderful man. Nelson you made a difference in our lives.
