Valerie’s Bio

Born in 1944 in Harrow Middlesex in England, Valerie always followed a creative path. In 1962 she went to the London College of Printing and Graphic Art. Here she met Christopher and began a love affaire that last for over 50 years – till the day she died. She then joined a documentary film company so she could be a true partner to her filmmaker husband.

Then in 1965, she was married in Johannesberg South Africa. After a cruise back to England she set up home in Old Windsor over looking the Great Park. Here she branched out to become the manager of Manpower in Reading and ran it till the birth of Tamsyn her daughter in 1968.

At Christmas the family journeyed to South Africa to enjoy the summer with her parents and brother Richard. Here she warmed to this new country and soon she and Christopher had a new life and career there. In 1971 a son Jonathan was born. For the next 15 years they lived on a three acre estate with dogs, horses, chicken. With the advent of Television in South Africa, Image Producers, Christopher’s film company prospered.

Unfortunately unrest in the country made the family look for a new home and in 1986, with good career prospects they move to Toronto, Canada.
Always seeking new opportunities, Valerie began a new career, as an Interior Designer . Soon she became very successful with many high profile clients.

By now both children were completing their education – Tamsyn was at Queens University and Jonathan was finishing at Upper Canada College.
Eager to get out of the city they bought a 10 acre horse farm in Schomberg in King Township. Here her first task was to totally redesign the interior of the home.

With the vagaries of the economy there followed their most difficult few years with Valerie sharing the load till Christopher formed CineNova. Back on track, Valerie, the busy Designer, now had her own studio on the property and an assistant Sherry who remained with her for several years.

Once the inside was done she now tackled the garden, Newly planted trees, banks of shrubs and an extensive vegetable garden appeared.

In 1997, Tamsyn married James and followed in 1998 by Jonathan marrying Paulette, both had their receptions on the property.

The lure of greener pastures tempted both siblings to seek new careers on the other side of the world so they headed to Australia. Shortly after, her parents Betty and Bill, left South Africa and also made their home in Australia. Tragically Betty died in December 2006 and so began the many trips she would make to island continent.
In 2010 there were changes. Christopher formed a new film company, Cream Productions Valerie, her career still going strong, her love of animals and particularly dogs, saw a new phase blossom – a dog sport called Schutzhund. Here again she was very successful and over several years reached the top level with two dogs.

Six grand children were born in the Antipides, so followed annual trips across the Pacific, as well as trips to Europe to broaden the mind and body.

In 2013 Valerie decided to retire, having won over a dozen awards with CEDECA for her interiors, to spend her time with husband, friends and family in the home and garden she had built up over 23 years

In July 2015 she and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on the same lawns as their children were married surrounded by friends and family. The perfect culmination of her life. How prescient was this event as, within months, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. An operation followed by four months of chemotherapy resulted in a clean bill of health for Valerie. In early 2016 there was a joyous 72 birthday, and family visits. Then tragically cancer struck back, this time in her pancreas. Yet another operation and again a successful one. But it was not to be. Within a month her liver was invaded by cancer cells. Both medical and Naturopathic remedies were employed by to no avail.

At 3:00 am on Friday July 30 Valerie died in her sleep with her husband Christopher and her daughter Tamsyn lying beside her.

So a beautiful, talented, much loved and caring woman passed from this world to the next.

Derek and I were so sad to hear about Valerie’s passing. Our love and thoughts are with Chris, Jonathan, Tamsyn and her much loved grandchildren. Valerie was an amazing role model to her children and her energy, enthusiasm, kindness, strength and love of life lives on to positively influence them through out their lives. Our children considered Valerie as a surrogate aunt as she so generously included us in Christmas dinners and so many memorable get-togethers. She had an inspiring ability to beautify her surroundings with such style and grace. We have very fond memories of walks, going to the theatre, a trip to Ottawa to see a Picasso exhibition, a time together in Atlanta and Vancouver and many more.

Valerie was such a lovely lady. So kind. So positive. So thoughtful. And a beautiful smile. I remember your champagne wedding party in Pinner all those years ago. Such a lot of fun. I’m just so glad that Geoff and I had the chance to spend that time with you both in Canada in the fall. Jacqy x x

    Dear Christopher, Tamsyn and Jonathan.
Such a shock to hear that you have lost your beloved Valerie. I am so bad at the facebook communication that I had no idea she was so ill.
My memories of Valerie are of an always smiling vibrant and beautiful woman. I first met her through Chris and the film industry many moons ago,Paul and I went to lunch in I think the big house in Buccleuch, Valerie did a search demo with her dogs and we all sat wine in hand gob smacked and how clever they were ! I think that could well have started my passion for training my own dogs.
When the family moved to Canada we lost touch except for the wonderful Christmas letters that Valerie sent out, the photos of the dogs in the snow and your beautiful home and garden.
Our thoughts are with you,we can only imagine your sadness, may all your memories of Valerie, wife and mother give you strength at this time.
Love and far away hugs to you all. Irene and Paul South Africa.

Our friendship with Valerie and Christopher began 35 years ago when they became our neighbours in Buccleuch, Johannesburg. We were influenced and inspired by herlove of life, her compassion, her love of nature, dogs, birds, cooking, dogs, interior design skills, more dogs. When she left to go to Canada she gave us her bearded collie pup that we took to Singapore where it lived a full life, intrigued and scared many a Singaporean Chinese and after 13 years died in Bonnie’s arms. We will never forget Gizmo, nor will we forget the person who gave him to us. Valerie, we know you are in a good place now-oh boy, don’t you just deserve it- and we have no doubt that you and Christopher will meet again. Sleep well beautiful lady. Your friends Ron and Bonnie

First and foremost we both send our deepest and most sincere condolences to Christopher and the entire family. Knowing Valerie from the time of her first arrival in Canada we have remained close friends and colleges over these many years, building a mutual respect and genuine affection for each other. Valerie was an exceptional woman, her energy was colossal, her empathy was boundless, her humour was infectious and above all I can still hear her laughter echoing inside my head. You have left a huge hole in our hearts Valerie, but the memory of all that you brought into the world will make everyone who ever got to know you a much better person. Thank you so much Valerie, we love you always. Daniel and Madeleine Izzard/Wyndels

To Christopher and the family: Sarah and I are sorry that we are away and can’t be with you this week.
I first met Valerie when we formed our film company, CineNova, partnering with Christopher in 1989, more than 25 years ago. Valerie and Chris were such a grounded couple, personally and professionally. And it was immediately obvious that Valerie would be indispensable in helping us launch our little team. Her many positive qualities lifted us all at a challenging time. And her design skills enhanced our offices as we grew.
As the many tributes you are receiving attest, Valerie was so very special. Kind, generous, energetic, vivacious, imaginative, beautiful inside and out. With a family solidly rooted in an international four-generational tree.
A life exceptionally well-lived. We will miss her.
