Dear Alistair:
I am very sorry to hear of your passing as are the rest of the McKendrick Clan.
You and Alison came into our lives when we were young and you had just arrived from Scotland as part of the Scottish diaspora. You seemed to have a Scottish radar that allowed you to connect with anyone of Scottish descent including our family.
You quickly engaged with us on many adventures whether it was house renovations, helping our dad deliver a new-born lamb or getting involved in Tottenham community events that went well beyond being Scottish – such as participation in Community Week and the Lions Club or organizing a parade. You also helped start the Burns’ Supper at the Tottenham Legion.
After our parents died you became a father figure to us in addition to being a long-time friend. On a personal level you mentored me and taught me how to organize and run a Burns’ Supper on my own.
I enjoyed the many hours we had together to share a few beers and some whiskey while discussing Scottish History, work matters, Canadian politics, philosophy and our families. I also loved hearing your stories about the things you and Alison did with our mum and dad when we were too young to know about them – stories that would have been lost to history had you not remembered them and recited them back to us.
Not only were you brimming with confidence but you impressed upon us that we also had every reason to be confident about ourselves.
I would have liked to spend more time with you but at the same time I did get to spend a lot of time with you and benefitted greatly as a result.
Thank you for all you did!
With love from John McKendrick
