Carol Mae Hunter

In Memorial

Hunter Carol 2HUNTER, Carol Mae Carmell
Born May 12, 1929 departed peacefully at age 95, on June 4, 2024 to her heavenly home to be with Christ which is far better. Carol, wife of the late Norman James Kendall Hunter leaves behind her five children whom she adored, son David (Barbara Beacham), daughter Elizabeth O’Hara, son Stephen (Beth Walker), son Mark (Tara MacNeil) and daughter Joyce Penelton.
Gram, as her grandchildren called her, leaves behind Carl Hunter (Alicia Wiersma), Norman O’Hara (Michelle Cassidy), Glen Hunter (Sarah Leyenaar), Lindsay McCourt (Justin McCourt), Heather Heiss (Kevin Heiss), Katie Valentin (Jon Valentin), Shane Hunter (Shannon Green), Daryl Hunter (Tanya Woodhead), Wesley Penelton (Sarah Longlade), Luke Penelton (Kiarra Wells), Heidi Penelton (Mike Fisher), Ryan Penelton (Alyssa Woolham), Reagan Hunter, and Lauryn Hunter. It always brought her joy to visit with her 20 great grandchildren and countless nieces & nephews. Survived by her dear sister Janice Kenny and predeceased by her son, Norman, sister, Helen Mauer and parents Austin and Ruth Carmell.

Carol lived every day for Jesus, her Saviour and was a great prayer warrior for each of her family members. They each counted on her prayers for them. She will always be remembered as a strong farming wife and mother who loved the challenge of sewing repairs and the canning and freezing of the farm garden produce. Carol enjoyed many friendships through the years while attending Pine Grove and Schomberg meetings and hosting Cottage meetings with her husband Ken. She was also a part of Bible Study Fellowship, Community Bible Study and Dessert Club in her later years. She often shared her gift of hospitality by hosting friends and family for meals and fellowship in her home.

With Christ, which is better by far. Philippians 1:23

For Gram’s 90th Birthday, all of the grandkids shared their favourite memories of Gram and we put them together in this poem that we all read to her. I made a couple little adjustments for today:

Today we celebrate Gram, what a special day!
To remember this lady, her grandkids all had something to say
Gram, you are a legend, in more ways than one
And we thought we’d recall some favourite memories for fun!

The number one thing that comes quickly to mind
Is your famous desserts, they are one of a kind!
Your brownies, tapioca, cheesecake and ginger snaps
But your famous “Norm’s squares” are what put you on the map!
Somehow you make each batch better than the last
We’d like them straight out of the pan, those squares go fast!

Your cooking is delightful, from soups, stews and jams
And you made it look easy to feed the whole fam!
Thanks for nourishing our bellies, with such yummy food
And teaching us manners so we didn’t act rude!
“Luke, Luke, strong and able” you’d say with a smile
Making dinnertime playful but teaching us all the while
Blessed God and Father, begins every meal
No elbows on the table, or we’ll feel like a heel!

Playing games at your table was such a delight
Uno, dominos, scrabble, even pit, (but that could start a fight!)
We think you let us win, for the most part when we were small
Teaching us to be gracious winners and losers, we recall

Your way with fabric was simply the best
You could press a sheet or a shirt better than the rest!
Teaching some of us to quilt, and mending clothes for us all
You’d make sure we didn’t walk around with ripped clothing at the mall!
You made corn bags, pajamas, and matching outfits for the girls
We loved to dress alike, and have our hair in braids or curls!

Music was a big joy, and your ability was grand
You always sang low harmony, and played piano with two hands
You loved to hear your grandkids play music as well
Whether in church or at concerts, it really made your heart swell!

You were a master gardener, growing vegetables for years
Zucchini, asparagus, beans, broccoli and rhubarb, coming out your ears!
You would French cut the beans, make relish and soups
And you’d fill up old ice cream containers to feed all your troops!

You loved feeding the birds at your house on the 5th
Putting out peanuts and bird seed, and chasing birds who would start a rift

You babysat lots of us, and we’d fall asleep to the sound
Of you playing the piano, those keys you could pound!
You’d take us to meeting, in your honda, dodge or jetta,
Helps us learn memory verses and wear your lacey mantilla
You drove us to work, and picked us up from school
You even had our friends over to play ping pong and pool!

Some of us lived elsewhere, and we’d visit on holidays
You’d have cereal bowls ready if we needed a late night graze
You’d also visit us, and would always come armed
With individual boxes of cereal, our favourite, Lucky Charms!

We have some images of you that are etched in our minds
That make us smile when they come to memory every single time!
Like you making soup, in your kitchen with care
Or watching wheel of fortune in your velvety chair!
Answering your phone with your classic – “heeeeeeello”
Or muting commercials when you watched your favourite shows
You loved your guestbook, that each visitor would sign
Visits were so meaningful to you, every single time
We’ve noticed your discipline, following routines so well
Reading your Bible and daily bread each morning, your faith has always been swell
You prayed for us each, every day, and we felt it
Knowing our warrior was lifting us, giving us strength from the Spirit
If you found a verse, a poem or quote that inspired you
You’d type it out and mail It to us to be blessed by too!
Thank you for loving us, in your very special way
You are the world’s greatest Gram, and we’ll miss you everyday

My memories of Carol go all the way back to Pittsburgh. I was a Sunday school kid. She was 16 years older than me and I remember her as a senior young person. Years later I married a Canadian and moved to Ontario. Both of us living on farms in Ontario. Our husbands were friends so we got together occasionally. She lived Christianity. She was a great example of the woman in Prov 31. Well done thou good and faithful servant , enter into your rest. She will be missed—–but we envy her portion now with her Lord and Saviour.

I want to send all my love and prayers to Gram’s entire family and extended community. Growing up I was fortunate enough to experience my childhood alongside my best friend Lindsay (Carol’s Granddaughter). I was blessed to have first hand experience of Gram’s kindness and wisdom. Gram would always welcome us to her home with open arms, a gaggle of young girls with lots of energy. This never bothered Gram, she was used to a house full of love noise. We would often have sleepovers in Gram’s basement, playing pool and ping pong. Gram would be there – yet she gave us our space to be kids, and later teenagers. When Lindsay and I were much younger, Gram would bedazzle all of our white t-shirts for any event at school that called for such a task. Jump Rope for Heart in particular stands out for me. I remember Gram taking the time to work in her sewing room preparing beautiful hand made designs on our shirts. I was most impressed when she transformed Lindsay’s IGA (now Foodland) uniform which at the time was boxy and unflattering. Gram nipped and pinned and sewed that uniform so that it fit Lindsay like a glove! Her love was demonstrated in so many ways, however the constant thread that I observed was her consistent and patient dedication to her family, church and community – often through acts of service such as cooking, baking, gardening and sewing. The incredible bond between Lindsay and her Gram was so beautiful and pure, one that continued when Lindsay moved to Kingston. Her dedication to visiting Gram every holiday, Mother’s Day and everything in between allowed that bond to continue to grow through Lindsay’s adult life.

Linds – we are all here for you as you grieve the loss of your beautiful Gram.

    Sincerely,
    Meaghan Beatty

Carol was my first cousin. She was very kind to me. I was the youngest in our generation, so I was the “little girl” when the other cousins were getting married. I felt badly at Carol’s wedding that she didn’t have a flower girl—I figured she couldn’t afford one. So I went about the neighbourhood and picked flowers and held them hoping folks would think I was the flower girl. I was age four. I would stay at Ken and Carol’s between Bible Camp and Bible Conference and loved our talks. We visited Carol and Ken on our honeymoon, and she was delighted to have a cousin also in Canada! Me too! She told me things that really helped…”Swallow your pride and buy nylons a size larger so they have give and won’t run so easily…”, “Oh, you’re expecting? Believe it or not, you are richer now, and debt free than you ever will be…buy some good baby equipment as you’ll be using it over and over and won’t be able to replace falling-apart stuff down the road, as I know you’ll have a large family too…” She was right…again. I helped her make sandwiches that we’d take out to the men and boys still out in the field in the evening, unable to take the time for a sit-down meal, on the farm. She was just a helpful, kind, loving “older sister” to me. When there was a Canadian mail strike, and Canada mail only letpriority business mail through, I used a regular white envelope to post my hydro bill and used the company business envelope but inside was a personal letter. She’d steam it open and reuse that business envelope to write me back. Carol, can’t wait to see and hug you again—hope it’s soon!
