It is with profound sadness that the family of Eldon Abernethy announces his peaceful passing at Matthews House Hospice, on January 6, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Dearly missed by his loving wife, Linda (McFadden) of 42 years, loving father to Brian (Kate) and David (Christine), and Grampa (AKA “Eldon”) to Xander and Clover. Dear brother of Jim (Kim Murphy), Gwen Green (late Morgan) and Gladys McKay (Jim). Sadly missed by his sister in laws Pat Abernethy, Ann Crawford (Ken), and brother in law Robert McFadden. Predeceased by his loving parents George and Mae (London) and in laws Edison and Eileen (Westlake) McFadden. Eldon will forever be in the hearts of his extended family, friends and neighbours.
Eldon lived on his family farm outside of Tottenham for 56 years. He was proud to raise his two sons on the family farm. In 2006, Eldon and his family moved to a farm outside of Ivy. Eldon was extremely proud of his Dexter cattle herd. Eldon was proud to work with his brother with J & E Contractors, a family owned construction company In his later years, he transitioned to working for his nephew Steven at Dardan Construction. Although Eldon was a true farmer at heart, he also took pride in the many commercial buildings, farms structures and homes they built throughout New Tecumseth and area.
Eldon was a proud member of the Georgian Bay Steam Show, Huronia Fur and Feather Club, and International Harvester Chapter 20 Club. In his retirement years, he became known for his beautifully crafted coffee tables, magazine racks, and cream can stools.
His family is grateful for the amazing care he received from Dr. Rohan Manocha, Southlake RHC, Stronach Cancer Centre, Matthews House Hospice, R.V.H. and St. Elizabeth Health Care.
We are thankful to have had such caring and wonderful neighbours, friends, and family. Thank you for all the prayers, kindness, meals, phone calls, and visits.
A public visitation will be held in the chapel on Wednesday January 10, 2024 from 12:00pm – 1:00pm at Rod Abrams Funeral Home, 1666 Tottenham Rd., Tottenham 905-936-3477. A reception will follow from 1:00pm – 3:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Eldon’s memory to Stronach Cancer Centre and Matthews House Hospice.
“ For all of us keeping track, Eldon has now officially used up all of his nine lives.”

Eldon was a very special person, who we always admired for his great smile, sense of humor, and his down to earth, country wisdom.
He was a wonderful ambassador of our country heritage.
We always enjoyed meeting and talking to him at the Steam Show, Beeton Fair Grounds, and all of Marion’s family get togethers.
