Eugene Anthony “Gene” DiFilippo

In Memorial

DIFILIPPO1Eugene “Gene” DiFilippo

March 2, 1940 – September 3, 2025

Born in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, Gene was orphaned during WWII before being adopted by a loving family in Hamilton, Ontario. At 18, he moved to Toronto, beginning his career as a display artist at Simpson’s, where he met his wife and best friend, Joanne. Together they built a life filled with creativity, family, and love.

A gifted artist, Gene expressed himself through abstract painting and later sculpting natural stone. He and Joanne shared many happy years on their farm, where Gene enjoyed his animals, his tractor, and the space to create. He cherished time with his daughters, Debbie and Lisa, their husbands Jim and Glen, and found joy in being “Papa” to his grandchildren, Meghan, Cameron and Daniel.

Gene also shared many joyful times with his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gary and Margie. Whether snowmobiling in winter or boating and swimming at the cottage in summer, their companionship was a treasured part of his life.

After Joanne’s passing, Gene lived with his daughter Debbie, who provided him with care, support, and companionship for many years. In his later years, as his health declined, Gene moved to long-term care at Villa Leonardo Gambin in Woodbridge. There, his kindness and gentlemanly nature shone through, quickly endearing him to staff and residents alike.

Gene’s passing was peaceful and without suffering, a blessing for his loved ones. He will be remembered as an artist, husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose creativity and warmth left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Arrangements entrusted to Rod Abrams Funeral Home. Private service will be held on Saturday September 6, 2025.

    Lisa and Debbie:

I am remembering all the main interactions that Margie and I had with your dad, starting with his visits here to see your mom when they were dating. And there was the wedding in 1967. In the many years that followed, there were many years we all enjoyed the cottage. But I think he most enjoyed living on the farm, enjoying the fresh air and pursuing his interests. I like to think both he and your mom are together again, as he wished. Indeed there many good years and the memories will last forever. It is impossible to fill the hole he has left behind but you know he would want all to enjoy life to the fullest.

    Dear Lisa and family,
My deepest condolences on the passing of your father. I still remember coming to your place on highway 27 with my sister. Both your parents were so sweet. Loosing a parent is never easy. But they will always be with you.
