Patricia Geater

In Memorial

Geater (nee Cornell), Patricia Ann
(Retired Emergency RN)

passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 4th, 2007 in her 68th year after a brief stay in Stevenson’s Memorial Hospital in Alliston. Living in Beeton for the last three years with her family, Pat was born in New Liskeard Ontario, spending much of her life in Toronto, Orillia and Chapala (Mexico). Loving mother of Rick and daughter-in-law Kristin. Loved by her best friend and granddaughter Andrea. Pre-deceased by her husband Richard (Dick). Loving sister to Marie Crawford and Frank Cornell and a loving Aunt Pat to many. She will be sorely missed by the many friends she made through her golf and bridge clubs. Pat loved and lived life to the fullest. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army would be appreciated. The family will visit with friends at Rod Abrams Funeral Home (#1666 Tottenham Road, Tottenham, 905-936-3477) on Monday February 12th from 12:30 to 1:30 pm, to be followed by a memorial service.

I met Pat a few days after arriving for my first winter in Mexico–my landady was one her many friends. We became good buddies and frequently enjoyed each others company socially, golfing and playing bridge. It was always one of my biggest frustrations that this slim, little female could readily whip me at golf-she didn’t hit the ball far–just straight.

She was a good person and a better friend–I shall miss her.

    Thanks Mom.

    Thanks for being my Mom.

Thanks for wiping my nose, mending my cuts and scraps, instilling my lifelong values.

For driving me to school, taking me to swim lessons, for walking me through life.

Thanks for teaching me how to ski, how to drive ?stick?, how to have confidence in all I do.

Thanks for bearing with me through my selfish teenage years, for letting me get a motorcycle and for not telling Dad everything.

Thanks for you endless humour and teasing.

Thanks for not being critical, but for guiding me and for letting me make my own decisions.

Thanks for being my best friend and for being such a good friend to all my friends.

Thanks for never compromising your values.

I, along with Pat’s bridge friends, was shocked and saddened by her death. In the short time that we knew her, Pat became very well liked. She was great company. She had a good sense of humour and liked to laugh. She obviously loved her family and her grandaughter, Andrea. It was comforting to learn that she died peacefully, without distress, in her son’s arms.We had hoped that we would have the pleasure of Pat’s company for many yaers to come. She will be greatly missed by her friends.Sooner or later, I suspect that some of us will be joining you in the future , Pat; so, please save us a seat at your bridge table!

Pat was in my grade 12 class in New Liskeard High School. She was also my close friend and classmate through three years of nurse’s training in Niagara Falls, Ontario. We had such wildly funny and fun times together during those years. Pat’s sense of humour was superb and her smile and laughter infectious. Pat always seemed to be able to track me down so that our friendship never weakened over the years. She talked so much about her son Rick, whom she adored, sharing pictures of him and later of his wife whom she spoke so highly and affectionately of. Her love for her little granddaughter was so very evident as she described her relationship and activities related to her. I am deeply saddened by Pat’s passing and will miss her greatly. Condolences to you Rick and family. Your mom was exemplary in her love of life, family, and friendships

    The Rose Beyond The Wall

A rose once grew where all could see,

    sheltered beside a garden wall,

And, as the days passed swiftly by

it spread its branches, straight and tall…

One day, a beam of light shone through

a crevice that had opened wide…

The rose bent gently toward its warmth

then passed beyond to the other side…

Now, you who deeply feel its loss,

    be comforted…the rose blooms there…

    Its beauty even greater now,

nurtured by God’s own loving care.

May God bless and comfort you and your family at this time of need.

Love and sympathy from Stan & Ellen.

Having best friends like Rick and Kristin, being considered ‘uncle Dale’ to Andrea, and being accepted as one of the gang by Pat during my visits and golf outings, has made me feel like part of the extended Geater family.

Time flies. It seems like not too long ago that I was in a whiteout in the back seat of a Ford Pinto wagon with two friends from high-school, and Pat Geater at the wheel. Why were we in whiteout? Because Pat was such an amazing Mom that she’d drive her fabulous son and his somewhat dubious friends from Toronto to beyond the snow-belt to go skiing on a day that would’ve been better spent in front of the fireplace. But she was driving very carefully and all seemed OK, at least from the back seat.

The treachery of the whiteout on Hwy 400 was punctuated by the sight of a Volvo spinning out of control towards us from behind. Despite Pat trying to get out of the way, it hit our car and sent us spinning further into an already multi-car pileup. But through all that Pat totally kept her head, acted swiftly and surely, and made sure we were all fine. Then she got us all home safely, and even had quite a few more laughs. An event like that really shows a persons true character — and proved even more what an amazing woman Pat was.

I think it’s the laughter and incredible sense of humour Pat had that I remember most — but equally so, it was the unjudgemental love of her family and friends, her joi de vivre, and her upbeat approach even when there was great adversity.

Even though we saw each other infrequently, I am blessed to have been able to know Pat for 25+ years. She was friends with many of her son’s friends — a real rarity, and testiment to Pat’s wonderful ability to relate with all types of people and of all ages. That was further in evidence recently when she interacted so effortlessly and good-naturedly with my step-children.

Pat’s spirit lives on in her son, daugher-in-law, and grand-daughter in a very tangible way. The legacy of positivity, laughter, and love of life instilled in them is bountifully abundant and seems such a clear gift and inspiration from Pat.

I think of her often; even moreso now that I can’t share a laugh with her again in person. But to you, Pat, a toast of fine tequila — and in laughing with your family in the years to come, we celebrate how your fantatic legacy live on. Cheers!

And to my dear friends Rick, Kristin and Andrea, Peace and Love.

Pat has left us all with so many fond memories. She was such a good friend. So full of life and so much fun. Somewhere along the way the should have been awarded Mother of the Year as she did such a beautiful job of raising her son and extended this love and wisdom to his wonderful family. She will be missed beyond belief. Save me a spot next to you Pat as we will meet again.

Since I was ten years old living in Florida I always looked forward to visits from my Aunt Pat. She could light up a room with her energy and laughter and she always seemed to bring out the best in the people around her. As an adult the visits moved to Georgia and I looked forward to them with the same enthusiasm. Three days of fun, laughter, practical jokes and late nights, then on to the next destination. I only regret that I didn?t get to spend more time with her.

Rick, our prayers are with you, Kristin and Andrea. I will miss my Aunt Pat.

Pat was a wonderful friend to my mother and myself as was her husband, Dick. My mom and Pat played golf together and we were always laughing at something. I am saddened at her loss as I just saw her brother, Frank and caught up on news. Frank stayed in our casita one winter and we saw a lot of Pat. She was one super person and I shall miss her sunny face, goodness, and wonderful sense of humour and fun.
