I just found out sitting at dinner on Christmas Eve taking about friends from back the day in Nobleton.

Ray was a mentor, when he worked for Treeland and a comrade when he was with Vaughan Fire. Always a friend who would lend an ear or tell his friends about this goofy red headed kid he would get stuck babysitting at work…me.

So sad and so sorry to hear of your loss. We all lost a great one.

So sad to hear about Ray. My deepest condolences to the Armstrong family. Ray and I were very close friends in our early years growing up on Elizabeth Drive. Ball hockey games, hiking in the fields and forests surrounding Hill’s farm, riding and taking care of their three ponies (I remember Tanner; Ray’s pony) on Grandpa Edwards farm south of Schomberg. It was a different time but they were the best of times. Ray’s mom was like a second mother to me. The memories and adventures we experienced will always be with me. Ray had enormous energy and an infectious laugh. Ray, thank you for your friendship.

    Maxine and family
We just found out that Ray has passed. We are so sorry
It was a shock, we feel terrible that we didn’t know at the time, as we would have been there to support you.
Ray was such a sweet person and kind. We only ran into him a couple of times over the years but knew each other growing up in Nobleton. We would say we should together, sorry we didn’t do that.
I’ll always remember, and still talk about it to this day,
My dad was living close to Nobleton when ha had a medical emergency. We flew to his house from Schomberg but they had already took him to the hospital.
But there was Ray, knowing my dad, had waited there probably knowing I would show up. He waited to inform us what had happened and with a big hug. He did that so we would not show up wondering what happened.
The fact that he did that for me means more than words can ever
say, he was a special person.
I’m not sure if this will get to you Maxine. I’m not sure if this page is still active. But I’m giving it a shot and I hope you get this.

October 24, 1980. A Friday. It’s the first day for a bunch of new firefighter recruits, who come together for the first time, that day. Eleven of us, I think there were. Ray among them.
From then, I knew he was a stalwart guy. Someone you could depend on. On the union, we depended on his wise council, a number of ways.
I left “VFD” 20 years ago. But one of the guys I always enjoyed seeing at gatherings was Ray.
May you rest easy, now, Brother.

We had wonderful conversations over a few beers talking about our mutual values and how proud Ray was of his family. Always enjoyed seeing Ray’s blue eyes light up when he talked about Max and his girls. Ray was so proud of his life, and so he should be! I can only imagine the countless number of people he must have helped during his Firefighter days.
