In Loving Memory Of Stella May Abrams August 13, 1916 – June 12, 2010
At Simcoe Manor Beeton, on Saturday, June 12, 2010. Stella Simmonds, in her 94th year, beloved wife of the late Cliff Abrams.
Loving mother of Rod and Sue, Janet and Lowell. Remembered with love by her grandchildren: Todd and Deborah, Andrea, Scott and Ashley, Sandy and Elizabeth, and her great grandchildren: Christian, Rowan, and Alex. Dear sister of George Simmonds, and pre-deceased by her brother Oskar, and sisters Evelyn (Mrs. Bob Roe), and Margaret (Mrs. Arthur Brooks).
Resting at her family funeral home in Tottenham 905-936-3477 on Monday, June 14, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral service will be held in the chapel at 11am, Tuesday June 15, 2010. Family Interment, Fraser Presbyterian Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please take the time to do something Stella always enjoyed, by talking on the phone or visiting someone in a nursing home who needs a friend to brighten their day. For those who wish donations may be made to one of Stella’s favorite charities: Tottenham Food Bank, 3 George Street, Tottenham, ON, L0G 1W0, or The Scott Mission, 502 Spadina Avenue, Toronto, ON, M5S 2H1 (416-923-8872)

What fun being Stella’s cleaning lady. I asked her “Don’t you get scared sleeping in a funeral home?” and she said “Imagine if someone broke in and saw an old lady in a white nightgown, wouldn’t you get a start?” I did get a start with Rod saying “Gotcha” when I was vaccuming and not paying attention. I will never forget Stella, her sweetness and kindness and boy did she know her mushrooms.

Mind-bending story from beginning to end. Getting on a train, vairntoully, for Auschwitz!!! Then having to see your sister unloading there, uhg! Getting out of one hellish Mengele detail somehow (I’m not sure I understood how they got out of that one; will read again), then somehow, in order to avoid what Rena believed would be a fatal winter, took a chance on another work detail courtesy of the good doctor! And she rolled 7s! Unbelievable and gutsy beyond words. The agony seemed to go on forever: 4 am, raus!!, ugh. I’d have never made it. Lots of lessons in this incredible account. I wish they could’ve both stayed with us for another century; would’ve loved to meet them both.

Tribute: Dear Abrams family, We were saddened to hear of your loss. Over the many years we knew Stella and Cliff, we were privileged to be shown such a great example of how to be involved in the community and to work together to improve things for all. I am not surprised to hear that Stella put as a high priority visiting shutins and those who are ill and I know you, her family, carry on that caring tradition. She will be very much missed. Yours, Sannie and Al
